NICE News for Health and Social Care

This month's newsletter includes:

  • Improving transitions from children’s to adults’ services: Nice have updated their quality standard on transition from children’s to adults’ services. It aims to help young people and their carers have a better experience of transition by improving the way it’s planned and carried out.The quality standard can be used to inform an approach to identifying gaps between services, developing action plans, and helping young people to access support and avoid crisis.Catch up on the latest news here.
  • NICE guidance on virtual wards: more than 10,000 virtual ward beds will be used by the NHS in England this winter to care for people with an acute respiratory infection (ARI). Here is a suite of guidance and resources to help manage ARI patients safely in their homes.
  • Listen to the virtual wards podcast: discussing the benefits and opportunities of introducing a virtual ward, or hospital at home service.
  • Check your social workers' registration status - the registration renewal period for social workers closed on Thursday 30 November and Social Work England has now updated the register. All employers and managers of social workers should check the registration status of their employees to help ensure compliance.
  • Social Work England has also published its latest analysis of registration renewal. This shows that 100,494 (97.3%) social workers renewed and were retained on the register in 2023.  Search the register here.
  • NICE's CEO, Dr Sam Roberts, reflects on 2023's highlights, covering progress against their transformation plan and how this has strengthened their role in supporting health and care practitioners to get the best care to people fast, while ensuring value for the taxpayer.  Read the end of year summary here.

Join a committee: health and care professionals from a wide range of backgrounds work with NICE to produce their recommendations. Your involvement helps to ensure their guidance is useable in practice. 

Resources: refreshed Population Health Management e-learning now available. NICE public health guidance can also help in this area. It makes recommendations for populations and individuals on activities, policies and strategies that can help prevent disease or improve health.
